The U.S. Senate is debating a piece of legislation some refer to as Cap and Trade. You may have heard it called Climate Change legislation, ACES, or the Energy Bill. While there is confusion surrounding what to call this legislation, let there be no confusion as to what this legislation will do to America.

For the following reasons, CountryMark opposes Cap and Trade legislation.

(1) Cap and Trade will eliminate two million American jobs. It is estimated in Indiana alone, 60,000 jobs will be the casualty of Cap and Trade. At a time when the American economy is struggling, Congress wants to pass Cap and Trade legislation that cost jobs.

(2) Cap and Trade will increase gasoline and diesel prices. It’s estimated that fuels will cost an additional 77 cents per gallon under Cap and Trade. Higher fuel costs are hard on everyone. They are hard on families. They are hard on companies. And they cripple the American trucking industry.

(3) Indiana electric bills will DOUBLE under Cap and Trade. Are you prepared to pay twice as much to heat your home?

(4) Cap and Trade makes American businesses less able to compete globally. When you increase energy costs, you increase product costs. For example, under Cap and Trade, it will cost an additional $80 per acre to grow corn. This burden will be devastating to American farmers. What impact will higher grocery bills have on low income families trying to feed their children?

(5) Cap and Trade will have minimal impact on the environment. Scientists agree that Cap and Trade legislation will decrease global temperatures by one half of one degree over the next 100 years. Is that outcome acceptable given the numerous negative aspects of Cap and Trade legislation?

Take action now. America needs to hear your voice. Speaking up as a private citizen can have a profound effect on the ultimate outcome of this key public policy decision. Let’s make our voices heard on this critical issue.

Ask your U.S. Senator to vote NO on Cap and Trade. THE COSTS ARE TOO GREAT -- THE RETURNS ARE TOO SMALL!
